Volunteers needed to serve on City Boards and Commissions.
The following information provides an overview of the various boards and commissions that exist within the City of Coopersville. These bodies provide an opportunity for citizens to participate in their local government and at the same time help to insure that the Coopersville City Council receives a broad spectrum of public input. Citizen involvement in local affairs is essential in keeping the city responsive to the needs of its citizens.
Anyone interested in applying for membership to Coopersville's boards and commissions should complete an application and return it to the City Clerk's Office. The application is then forwarded to City Council for their review and eventual appointment decision.

Boards and Commissions
Board of Review:
The Board of Review shall review property assessments as set by the City Assessor and hear appeals by individual property owners; then reduce, adds to or denies said appeal.
Term: Three years
Meetings: Three times a year (March, July, December)
Members: Lauri Douglas, Randy Hoolsema, and Peter Ryder
Alternate: Tammy Huff
City Council:
The six Council members and Mayor shall constitute the legislative and governing body of the City. They shall be elected from the City at large.

Construction Board of Appeals:
The Construction Board of Appeals members must have expertise in a building trade or profession. The appeals process is for questions of interpretation, proper application and equivalency only. If the board has cause to avoid the strict application of a particular section of the codes, they may grant a waiver of specific code requirements.
Term: Two Year

Downtown Development Authority:
The Downtown Development Authority shall correct and prevent the deterioration in the business districts, the encouragement of historic preservation, the creation and implementation of development plans in the district, and the promotion of economic growth in the DDA.

Election Commission:
The Election Commission shall, before each election, appoint for each precinct of the city a Board of Inspectors.
Local Officers Compensation Commission:
The Local Officers Compensation Commission shall determine the salaries of the Mayor and members of Council.
Term: Five Years
Meetings: (Meets in March of each odd year)
Planning Commission:
It is the function and duty of the Planning Commission to prepare a Master Plan for Land Use and to advise the City Council in regard to the proper development of the City of Coopersville. The Planning Commission reviews and recommends to City Council all requests for change in zoning and ordinance text amendments. The commission also reviews and approves industrial, commercial and residential development site plans within the City.

Recreation Advisory Board:
The Recreation Board shall guide and direct the providing of recreational services to community residents. To advise, make recommendations, and influence the community decision on recreation matters.
Term: One Year
Meetings: first Monday in January and June at 6:30 P.M.

Zoning Board of Appeals:
The Zoning Board of Appeals authorizes use in a zoning district in which it is not otherwise permitted, provided it is clearly shown that the land cannot be utilized for a zoned use. The board is empowered to act on matters where the zoning ordinance provides for administrative review, interpretation, exception or special approval permit, and to authorize a variance.
